Organic vs Not Organic vs Homegrown

Today is not like it was 100 years ago, 50 years ago, 10 years ago. Heck, technology advances EVERY DAY!  If you are a  half a century old like me, your grandparents probably had a garden. Honestly, I have no idea how they fought infestations but I have to believe it was not chemically driven. So what's my point?  If you want REAL, TRUE ORGANIC food, grow it yourself!  This picture is of my sweetheart, Woody, starting our garden at our new home in the country. The only way we can be sure that our food is fresh and "organic" is to grow it ourselves. You may be scoffing at this statement. That's your perrogative. Here is my take on our current state of affairs.

Certified organic means that somone has spent alot of money and a lot of time to have the government come in and certify them. What happens if an organic farm has a huge infestation that they can't get rid of? Do you think they will take the financial hit or do  you think they may use "just a little bit, just this one time" of a chemical pesticide?  Remember, we are talking about their livelihood....how they are making their money, paying their mortgage, supporting their families.

Woody and I had the pleasure of meeting citrus growers who have been in our area since 1961. I asked them if they were certified organic. Their answer was "no". They also said they do everything possible not to use chemical pesticides as they are REALLY expensive. However, there are times that nothing else works. I was under the impression that non-organic farms used pesticides on a regular basis.  Yes, there are many area in life that I am ignorant.

So here is my next question. Do you believe that science is bad? Another thing I believe is that without science our world would be an entirely different place.  Maybe we wouldn't be over-populated as we would have died what would now be considered a "pre-mature" death. Drugs kill cancer cells AND good cells. The use of chemical pesticides may mean that we wouldn't have enough food supply for our growing population.

I'm going out on a limb here. Truthfully I'm scared to death of what everyone will think of me by writing this blog. Without Monsanto maybe we would be starving! I am NOT condoning the use of chemicals in our food source. My point is to get both sides of the story. My point is that if you TRULY want chemical-free food, grow your own!

I would LOVE to hear your point of view so bring it on please.
